Declutter your home to supercharge your body and mind

So the new year is almost half way through already and your resolutions;  to get fitter, eat less chocolate, learn a new language and declutter your home are well and truly in full flow..? Alright, so maybe not all of them and maybe you already know the reason why? Usually it's simply due to the fact that these things demand a change in habits and altering a habit is difficult.

But, can I let you into a little secret of what is easy? Becoming more organised! No genuinely, it's far easier than you think. So I thought I would post a few articles focused on sharing some uncomplicated tips for decluttering your home and turning your living space into a sanctuary of peace and harmony.

The declutter organisation plan

A wise man once said "even the longest and most difficult ventures have a starting point". I don't know who that man was but he clearly has never been around to my house and I'm guessing yours either? But you shouldn't worry! Whilst looking at your garage, attic, shed or spare room bursting at the seams may be overwhelming, getting going is simply a matter of starting small and making a plan.

So let's take a look at your initial steps to declutter your home:

Step 1 Pick one challenge and one only

If you’re like me, you've got several degrees of pandemonium located around your home. Kitchen cabinets crammed full of pots and pans. A spare room that is about as spare as the Chinese ribs you had on the weekend. A shower room that is more shower than room. So decide on the one spot in your home that troubles you the absolute most. By simply selecting one place to concentrate on, you are less likely to become overwhelmed and you'll actually start to feel relieved once the organisation starts.

Step 2 Set a declutter date

London wasn’t built in a day and neither will your decluttering. But someone did decide when to start and start they did. So reserve some time in your diary, not a lot of time, maybe an hour or two, mark this as "Declutter Day", then stick to it. All things considered, this truly is time for making your life better, so don't waste it on anybody but you and your clutter.

Step 3 Keep, Chuck, or Store?

It’s everyone's mind fudge choosing what to keep, what to throw out and what to put in storage. But I assure you that this part need not lead to hair pulling or teeth grinding. The truth is, as soon as you get moving, this is one of most invigorating parts of the process. Why you ask? Simply because you’re progressing and the moment you recall just what it feels like to see the floor in your spare room or discover your favourite pair of heels, you’ll be addicted.

Therefore, whilst you continue to focus on a small area, separate your things into three sections:

  • Don't remember why you have it? Chuck it out
  • Love love love it? Keep it
  • If in doubt? Put it in storage

The final result will still be a less cluttered living area without having possible regrets later for throwing something away.

So I wish you the very best of luck in your journey to declutter your home - it’s your first step towards freeing your mind, body & soul...
